Life as a Fifth Ring intern

What was your favorite part of interning at Fifth Ring?

It’s definitely been a unique experience being an intern at a global B2B marketing agency. I’ve enjoyed learning how to expand marketing plans on a global scale and how to integrate all of the different verticals of marketing to successfully do this. I was born and raised in Houston, TX, so getting to experience a more global perspective and helping with diverse projects has been my favorite part.

What is something surprising you’ve learned?

I knew that marketing agencies juggle many projects with multiple clients, but I never took into consideration the work they do for the agency itself. The agency has to allocate plenty of time and resources to market itself in addition to its clients. From networking to campaigning for new prospects to sponsoring events, it’s been interesting to learn about all the tasks the agency does to create brand awareness.

How could you use these skills in the future?

I’ve actually already started implementing many skills I’ve learned into my schoolwork! Learning all about Google Analytics has been an extremely valuable skill that I’ve carried into my projects this past semester and will utilize in future jobs as well. Being able to have hands on experience looking at analytics for clients has been incredible. I had so much fun learning how to navigate the platform, analyze trends and gain insight into customer behavior.

What are your favorite projects you’ve worked on?

I’ve had the pleasure of working on a variety of projects over the last seven months. One of the projects I enjoyed the most was conducting a social audit. I analyzed the client’s social media channels and how they used their platforms, the type of content posted, how often they post and the engagement rates. I learned how powerful social media can be and how much planning needs to go into creating content. I also enjoyed working on marketing communications content calendars. These are six- to 12-month plans that include all the upcoming marketing opportunities like events, editorial opportunities, social media, content and more. I’ve learned how important it is to integrate all opportunities to effectively meet the campaign objectives of the client.

Has this internship helped you discover what you want to do as your future career?

This internship has given me a lot of insight into all the different components of a marketing agency. I’ve had the opportunity to experience working with brand and strategy, social media, SEO and events. Now that I’ve had hands-on experience in many different areas, I’ve started to narrow down what type of work interests me the most. It’s been a great opportunity to watch and contribute in a wide variety of marketing services.

What advice would you give future Fifth Ring interns?

My advice to future interns is to learn as much as you can during your time here. Don’t get stuck in a rut with your weekly tasks and ask for new projects or to learn different things. This is a great way to expand your skill set and knowledge.

Overall, I had a great time interning at Fifth Ring Americas and have learned plenty of valuable marketing skills. I was also able to experience agency life and work in a collaborative and supportive environment.
