I’m always conscious that although our Aberdeen office benefits from strength in numbers, it’s also important for us to regularly connect with colleagues in our more glamorous locations. After all, without them, we wouldn’t be the successful integrated, international business we are today.
Keeping in touch with colleagues across the globe is not always easy given the time differences and the fact that we aren’t always directly working on projects with them. But this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pick up the phone and ask what the weather’s like in Dubai (granted as we look out our windows in Aberdeen, this may not be the topic of conversation we opt for), or what view Himanshu has from his office, or how big Ed’s new barbecue is . . .
By mid-2013, I had already worked on a couple of interesting projects with our Houston office and this had inspired me to pick up the phone and check in with colleagues in Singapore. I thrive on the concept that, despite the thousands of miles of land and sea between us, together we are quite a powerful force and what’s more, we’re able to confidently present ourselves to the client as one Fifth Ring.
Several months later and we’ve just collaborated on the delivery of proposals to four different clients in South East Asia. By the end of December 2013, we were just a few small steps away from clinching our first inter-office Brand & Strategy project in Singapore. I’m pleased to say that calls with Himanshu and his team are now a regular occurrence.
It’s easy to assume that our friends in Dubai, Houston and Singapore are connected with us because they all have Fifth Ring above their doors, but it’s up to all of us to strengthen the connection and share the love! I urge my colleagues to pick up the phone, Skype or ‘hang out’ with our international buddies. You never know what you might find out!
